Thunderstorm Detector BTD 300  The detector is sensitive to all forms of lightning (cloud-to-ground, cloud-to-cloud etc.) and provides accurate range estimation for lightning up to 83 km 51 miles) away. Storm direction is also available if combined with the optional direction finding module. Output is updated every 2 seconds and can be displayed on computer or warnings indicated directly via optional relays. Users can customize the distance for up to four lightning proximity alerts.

Thunderstorm Detection Thunderstorms pose a major risk to human activity and infrastructure, with hazardous conditions ranging from floods to hail, tornadoes and lightning. The best indicator of thunderstorm activity is the presence of lightning, which fortunately produces a powerful, broad spectrum of electromagnetic signals revealing its presence thousands of kilometers away. Radio waves from lightning are modified during their journey from the storm and while characteristics such as signal amplitude reduce with distance, such signal changes are not usually sufficiently robust to allow accurate ranging to the storm. Lightning location methods therefore either require signals received by multiple sensors arranged as a large network, or if only a single site is available, a receiver and complex processing algorithms analyzing various waveform characteristics to determine lightning range and in some cases direction as well.

Biral-Felix-Ambient Light Sensor Calibrator  The Biral ALS-2 is a sensor designed to provide an accurate and reliable determination of the amount of background light during all weather conditions. Such a sensor is usually referred to either as an Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) or Background Luminance Sensor. Such sensors are typically used as part of a system to determine the Runway Visual Range at an aerodrome. The ambient light received by the sensor’s 6° field of view is focused onto a photodiode of similar spectral response to the human eye. The output from the photodiode is used to determine the ambient light level using the standard (SI) units of candela per square meter (cd m-2), averaged over one minute.

Biral’s New Ambient Light Sensor-product The Biral ALS-2 is supplied pre-calibrated. However, it is recommended that periodic calibration checks are performed as part of routine maintenance of the sensor. Such periodic checks may also be a necessary requirement if the sensor is used as part of an aerodrome runway visual range system. To facilitate convenient in-field calibration checking, Biral has developed a portable calibration unit specifically for the ALS-2, available as an additional option.
